England vs Algeria - As it happened

June 18, 2010 11:39 pm | Updated November 28, 2021 09:07 pm IST

Hello and welcome to our live-updates between England and Algeria. An important game this for both sides. Algeria need a postive result to stay in contention for a round of 16 place while England can go top of Group C with a win.

David James has replaced Robert Green in goal as England face a banana-skin in the shape of Algeria.

The team news is in:-

England James, Johnson, Carragher, Terry, Ashley Cole, Lennon, Barry, Lampard, Gerrard, Rooney, Heskey.

Algeria M'Bohli, Bougherra, Belhadj, Yahia, Kadir, Yebda, Lacen, Halliche, Boudebouz, Ziani, Matmour.

Before going any further, here's a random list of some high profile goal-keeping clangers by the English after the turn of the 21st century.

In the 2002 World Cup, against Brazil, David Seaman was well out of his line as he expected Ronaldinho to put in a floater of a free-kick from just near the half-way line. The buck-toothed genius had a different idea and left Seaman red-faced as he scored directly.

The last time England played Croatia at the Maksimir, the Three Lions beat the Croats 4-1. However, in the qualifiers for the last Euros, England went to Maksimir and lost thanks to a Paul Robinson howler who did not read a Gary Neville backpass which bumped up just as the then Tottenham keeper was about to kick the ball.

David James allowed one to squirm through under his hands for an equalising goal as England looked to close out a game against Austria. The Austrians made it 2-2 and held on. This was during the qualification for the last World Cup.

That's about that for random facts for the time being. The teams are in the tunnel and we are just minutes before kick-off.

Rise, for the national anthems.

The national anthems have been sung and the players are shaking hands.

Gareth Barry has also won his fitness race and starts for the Three Lions. What kind of an impact will he have?

The Algerian keeper from the first game has also been replaced. Not surprising as he let Robert Koren's effort go past him in their opening game rather tamely.

Algeria get the game under way and they will be playing from left to right on your TV screens.

3rd minute Ashley Cole wins an early free-kick but England cannot make anything of the early set-piece.

4th minute Gerrard tried to find Heskey with a cross from the left but it almost catches out the Algerian keeper.

6th minute Ashley Cole is almost in but Bougherra holds his own and wins the duel. That could be an interesting battle to watch as the match wears on.

Algeria has also made some forays into the their attacking third. Carragher and Terry's lack of pace could cause Capello some anxious moments.

12th minute A good, loopy ball from the right by Bougherra causes some anxious moments to James but he palms it away to an English player. Matmour was watching it closely.

15th minute Things look promising on the English right as Lennon spots Gerrard around 20-yards from goal. But the English captain hits it first time and the shot scoops and goes into row Z.

17th minute A searching cross from Algeria, from the left, sees Carragher trying to clear it first time. But he airs his shot and it goes to James who handles it. That could have gone anywhere. Carragher actually sliced his clearence to James.

It's been Algeria who have almost had all the possession for the last 10 mins. They are looking good down the left with Ziani particularly impressive.

22nd minute They almost work their way to an opening goal, the Algerians. Another clever little passage of play, this time from the right, is cut back for Yebda but it just goes his head.

24th minute Another Algerian attack down the right earns them a corner. From which Belhadj puts in a floater but James holds.

Algeria with 56% possession are bossing England.

28th minute The English fans look concerned as Terry is limping. Concerned for their teams performance so far or for Terry's injury only they will know.

30th minute Captain Fantastic Gerrard tries to bring England from their slumber with a low drive from 22-yards. The Algerian keeper saves it though.

32nd minute A defence splitting pass from Ziani releases Belhadj who twists and turns before putting in a weak cross which is handled by James.

33rd minute Lennon, on the right, puts a pin-point cross to Lampard whose scuffed left-foot effort from inside the box is saved brilliantly by the keeper. Lampard must have thought he had put England ahead.

35th minute Barry loses a challenge in midfield and the Algerian midfield picks up the pieces and plays in Ziani. Ziani runs at the English defence before firing in an effort from around 20 yards which just goes wide of James's right-hand side.

39th minute Lennon tries to make progress down the right before finding Barry with a sideways pass. The comeback man's shot, from just outside the box, is handled comfortably by the keeper.

Whenever the English has the ball, the Africans have applied lots of pressure and are playing in a high-tempo pressing game. The same, unfortunately, cannot be said of England. They have just been happy to watch Algeria dribble and pass freely. Not the stuff one would have come to expect from a side coached by Fabio Capello.

44th minute Rooney, who has not had a lot of touches tonight, has a sighter at goal from 25-yards. And he does not need a second invitation but his effort is saved.

And the half-time whistle goes.

It's been a very enterprising Algeria who have made all the headlines in the first-half. England has been very obdurate and have seldom ventured on adventurous forays into their attacking third. Capello will be looking for more from his boys while the Africans will know they can get something from this encounter.

See you in five minutes for all the second-half action.

Before the start of the second-half, just catch up on all of the day's action so far. >Serbia stunned Germany with a 1-0 victory while >the United States drew their encounter with Slovenia

The second-half has kicked-off. And there has been no changes at half-time.

47th minute Algeria has an early set-piece but Yahia, after making Shoaib Akhtar proud by taking a very long run-up, slams it straight into the wall.

50th minute Terry bundles Matmour over to gift Algeria another free-kick from a similar position. The resulatant free-kick, which is driven in all along the carpet by Yebda, is cleared by England.

Capello is shouting instructions down the touchline area with David Beckham twitching in his seat.

53rd minute Heskey has a shot at goal from the right but it's not even close to bothering the keeper. A penny for the thoughts of one Theo Walcott at this moment would be a great investment, methinks.

55th minute Algeria is sloppy and England almost cash in. They gift the ball to England near their own area and Gerrard has acres of space down the right. But the English captain cuts back to an Algerian defender.

59th minute Carragher commits a foul on Yebda on the edge of the area. He receives a yellow for his troubles. The resultant free-kick, again taken by Yahia, goes to the left of James but does not cause his undue distress. The yellow rules out Carragher from their game against Slovenia.

61st minute Both teams have been wasteful from set-pieces today. A corner from Gerrard is pocketed safely by the keeper.

62nd minute Some English pressure almost pays off. An earlier attack is never really cleared and Lennon's teasing cross from the left misses two English heads and goes behind.

That is to be Lennon's last action as he's been replaced by Shawn Wright-Phillips.

64th minute It had to happen sometime. David James is quick off his line but is almost beaten to a backpass by an Algerian. Terry, with his backpass, almost sold James down the river there.

70th minute Heskey's shot from inside the D is blocked and the rebound settles into the roof of the net with Rooney lurking closely. Heskey should have done better there than just find an Algerian leg. The resultant corner is headed by Gerrard straight into the hands of the keeper. Gerrard set up Heskey there.

Ziani and Matmour have been a real handful today and Carragher, already on a yellow, would need to careful against the pair.

Changes . Abdoun replaces Boudebouz while Defoe comes on for Heskey.

75th minute The most proactive England player in the match, Gerrard, this time plays in Defoe but some backs to the wall defending from Bougherra prevents the Spurs man from putting England ahead.

England has at last seemed to up the ante. Johnson's cross from the right earns them a corner.

79th minute Some threatening developments down the right for Algeria but the flag is up for offside.

The very impressive Ziani, who seems to suffering from cramps, is coming off for Guedioura.

82nd minute An early cross from Johnson sails over the keeper and out for a goal kick. England, to use a very polite word, has been shocking up till now.

The lanky Peter Crouch is coming on for Gareth Barry. We could see some hoof ball from the Three Lions. Hold on to your hats. There could be a grandstand finale yet.

84th minute Lacen goes into the book for taking out a breaking Wright-Phillips.

88th minute A long-range harmless low drive from Lampard goes wide.

Mesbah replaces Yebda. Just one minute of normal time remaining.

90th minute A beatufully-weighted long range free-kick is flighted into the England penalty box but James catches.

Three minute additional time

90+1 Defoe sees his name in tomorrow's papers and decides to go for a spectacular drive from 25-yards but it goes over.

90+4 England has a corner but can make nothing of it.

The final whistle goes and the boos outnumber the vuvzelas as English fans are very disappointed with a static English performace.

They were supposed to comeback and atone for Rob Green's error but they did not do justice and were largely listless against a very enterprising Algeria side. They failed to play as a team and did not deserve anything more than a share of the spoils.

This, though, for the neutral sets up the Group rather well. Slovenia will meet England in the final group game knowing that a draw will be enough to send the Slovenians through to the last 16. The United States, on the other hand, can qualify at the expense of England if they can beat this Algerian side, who in turn can qualify if they pump some goals past the US and hope that Slovenia gets a positive result.

See you all again for the Netherlands vs Japan game today from 16:30 IST.
