Javito was on target against his compatriots as Aris Thessaloniki stunned Spanish holders Atletico Madrid 1-0 in opening Europa League group stage action on Thursday.

Unbeaten at home in Europe in 42 years, the Greeks Aris contained Diego Forlan and company and the former Barcelona b-team player Javito volleyed the winner just before the hour.

Ambitious Manchester City did better with a 2-0 victory at Red Bull Salzburg and Patrick Helmes scored a hat-trick as ex-champions Bayer Leverkusen routed Rosenborg Trondheim 4-0.

Artjoms Rudnevs also got three goals, including a stoppage-time equaliser, as his Polish club Lech Poznan fought to a surprise 3-3 draw at Italian giants Juventus Turin.
