Bharath's brace helps S. Rly down SBI

April 22, 2011 01:15 am | Updated 01:15 am IST - CHENNAI:

M. Bharath's brace handed Southern Railway a 3-0 win over SBI in the St. Joseph's-CFA senior division league here on Thursday.

The defeat signalled relegation for SBI as the second-last team in the competition with four points and a solitary game in hand.

Jaison Baby put Southern Railway ahead in the 16th minute when a lapse in SBI's defence line following a corner resulted in a goalmouth skirmish. Baby's right-footer, although mild, still found the net through the maze of defenders.

A few minutes later, Mohd. Habib squandered a chance to equalise when he went one on one with the Southern Railway goalkeeper, Amalraj.

Habib's shot was saved by the custodian diving to his right at full stretch.

SBI's Mathan brought down Venkatesan in the box in the 77th minute, resulting in a penalty for Southern Railway, which was converted by Bharath for 2-0. Bharath added to the tally in the 86th minute when his long-ranger from about 30 yards whistled past the airborne goalkeeper and into the goal. Amalraj was named Man of the Match.

In the first division league, a brace each by M. Karthick and A. Ranjith helped Universal beat Perambur Blues 5-3.
