Women’s coach: six shortlisted

The Indian senior women’s cricket team is scheduled to play three ICC championship matches (three ODIs) in Sri Lanka in September and the ICC World T20 in the West Indies in November and the BCCI is looking to appoint a Head Coach after Tushar Arothe resigned from the post in July.

India is placed sixth in the ICC championship and the matches against Sri Lanka are seen as important engagements.

India is also scheduled to play five T20 games during the Lanka tour.

On Friday, the BCCI interviewed over 20 aspirants, including a candidate from Ireland.

After the initial process, six applicants have been shortlisted — Mamatha Maben, Sunil Joshi, Ramesh Powar, Atul Bedade and Sanath Kumar, bowling coach of the India under-19 team, and Rajkumar Sharma.

With the Supreme Court stating that the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), consisting of former international cricketers, have to be involved in the appointment of the Head Coach of National teams, the BCCI may be compelled to put an end to the coach-hunting process and continue with the interim arrangement.

Powar, who was the interim coach, supervised the 12-day camp in Bengaluru in July-August.

It is not known if the Committee of Administrators (CoA) would reconstitute the CAC which has Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and V.V.S Laxman as its members.

“With the Lodha reforms coming into force, Ganguly (CAB president) cannot be part of the CAC because of the conflict of interest rule,” said a BCCI official.
