We did not execute our plans well: Pothas

Bright start, but... After Shannon Gabriel nailed K.L. Rahul in the first over, there was very little to celebrate for the Caribbeans.

Nic Pothas, the West Indies fielding coach, admitted that West Indies lost the plot in the first session, with dashing opener Prithvi Shaw tearing the bowling apart on the opening day of the first Test.

“I think we could have probably started the day a little bit better and, having said that, Prithvi played really well. Early on, we probably did not execute our plans as well as we would have liked to but we dragged the game back very well and I was very, very happy on how we stuck to our guns all day long,” Pothas said, adding a word of appreciation for fast bowler Shannon Gabriel.

“For Shannon to come back, having bowled 18 overs through the day in that heat and still be bowling 145kmph an hour… huge credit to the hard work he has done on his fitness. We’re probably satisfied with the day, but we have still got a lot of hard work to do.”

Pothas said that captain Jason Holder’s right ankle injury will be monitored on a daily basis, indicating that the all-rounder, who was ruled out the game on the morning of the match, may be available for the second Test in Hyderabad next week.
