India-A coach Rahul Dravid said that the one day series against England Lions was a lot closer than the scoreline of 4-1 suggests.

He felt that India-A side showed good fighting spirit to win the series.

“Contrary to the scoreline there were situations where we were pushed to the wall and challenged, but we never gave up and showed some good fighting spirit. We played really well to win.

“From our perspective the positives were that we were able to experiment with a lot of young players and bring them into our India-A set-up.

Experiment

“We experimented with at least 20 players in the series to see how good they are,” Dravid said.

The former India captain said he wasn’t concerned with the lack of runs from K.L. Rahul and said the batsman had proved himself in all forms of the game and had succeeded at the international level.

“I have no doubt he has the ability. He is one player who has got hundreds in T20s, 50-over formats and Tests. Not many people have it. He has proven himself. I am not too worried about his form,” he said.

Dravid’s counterpart Andy Flower was happy that his team could pull off a win in the last match. He felt India played the key moments better and said that the overall depth and quality of Indian bowling in both pace and spin departments were responsible for the team’s success.

India batted deep

“I felt we got into winning positions in almost all matches. But India played the key moments better. India had a lot more experienced internationals than us and they batted deep also,’’ he said.

Flower said the wickets on this tour were challenging and it was a good learning curve for his batsmen.

The former England coach said he was happy with the way Sam Billings batted and captained the side.
