The Supreme Court on Thursday quashed criminal proceedings against cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni in an Andhra Pradesh court for a picture published in a magazine showing him as Lord Vishnu.

A Bench led by Justice Dipak Misra junked proceedings against the editor of the magazine, while noting unleashing criminal action against both would be a “travesty of justice”.

Last year, the court had stayed the criminal proceedings and issued notice to Yerraguntla Shyam Sundar, who had filed the complaint, on a petition by Mr. Dhoni, represented by Supreme Court advocate Liz Mathew.

In 2015, the court had stayed the criminal proceedings against the cricketer in a similar case in a Bengaluru court.
