After having had Gujarat on the mat for a good part of the match, coming away with just three points will no doubt hurt. But Karnataka skipper Vinay Kumar chose to keep his chin up.

“I wanted six points from this game, but as captain I am happy with the way we played,” he said. “Credit to their batsmen. Under severe pressure, Rujul [Bhatt] and Bhargav [Merai] tackled our bowlers really well. A few catches also went down and may be if we had taken them, we might have been in a better position.”

Coming on the back of a defeat to Saurashtra, Karnataka’s two-match away tour has now delivered just three points. K. Gowtham, who impressed here on his return from New Zealand, was sorely missed in Rajkot, Vinay said.

“Before coming on this twin-match tour, I wanted to get at least six points combined. But it happens. In the last game, if Gowtham had been there, the story would have been completely different.

“I am very happy with the way he bowled and took responsibility here.”

Vinay though admitted that his side was far from being a finished article. “There is something lacking… sometimes it's the bowling, sometimes the batting or fielding.

“But we need to understand that this is a young side. If you see it that way, there are many positives to take.”
