Ranji probables start in right earnest

more-in

The Tamil Nadu probables for the upcoming Ranji season began their conditioning and training camp at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium here on Monday. The camp will last three weeks.

Tamil Nadua, last season’s runner-up, will start its campaign against Baroda at Chepauk from October 1 to 4.

Former Tamil Nadu wicket-keeper batsman, M. Sanjay, expected to be named the side’s coach, was in charge of the camp. The indications are that former India opener Abhinav Mukund will be named captain before the conclusion of the camp. R.I. Palani will hold the important post of the cricket manager.

Former India paceman L. Balaji is not a part of the camp but is likely to be named the bowling coach who would also play some big games for the side.

A source close to the selection panel said to The Hindu, “Balaji is a team man and he will be excellent in the role of a bowling coach. He is also among the finest bowlers produced by the State and we need his services as a bowler, particularly in conditions where he can make an impact. He is to Tamil Nadu what R. Vinay Kumar is to Karnataka.”

The source added, “If you look at the last season’s Ranji final, it was Balaji who put Karnataka under pressure with three quick wickets. He is still very much in our plans as a senior paceman who can make a difference.”

Also missing from the list is promising young batsman M. Shahrukh Khan. “He needs to realise that he has to score runs. He doesn’t have sizable scores this season, in the TNCA first division league or the Buchi Babu tournament. Other young cricketers in the same age-group as Shahrukh have done better than him. He is in the State under-23 scheme of things and he has to get runs there,” said the source.

A lot of focus will be on the bowling and the competition for the left-arm spinner’s slot will be interesting. R. Aushik Srinivas, D.T. Chandrasekar, Rahil Shah and R. Sai Kishore have all been bowling well this season. Leg-spinner M. Ashwin, an attacking option, also finds a place.

Top-order batsman S. Aniruda misses out but the source said, “He (Aniruda) has been among runs this season and he will definitely be in contention for a place in the State one-day and Twenty20 sides.”
