Mushfiqur wants to put up improved show

Bangladesh’s shock defeat to Afghanistan here on Saturday has resulted in the home team’s cricket body initiating some tough measures.

Reports in the local media state that Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hassan met with skipper Mushifqur Rahim and coach Shane Jurgensen on Sunday to identify the reasons behind the team’s dismal show. There were apparently queries directed at the focus-levels of players and if external factors such as commercial endorsements were a distraction. There was also a speculation that the efforts of Nasir Hossain, Abdur Razzak, and Sohag Gazi were criticised.

On Monday, Mushfiqur denied that naming the players would add to the pressure. “To be honest, I have not seen or heard about it.”

Mushfiqur did admit, however, that the disturbances would linger in the back of the mind. “It’s pretty hard when things are not going in your favour. There will be questions asked.

“It’s disappointing, but you will have to be mentally tough and focus on your job. The biggest challenge is playing as a team. It’s time to show the world that the Bangladesh team is improving.”

What will hearten him is the return of star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan after a three-match ban. “It’s good for us. He’s been a key player for us in the last few years. It [his return] will hopefully make the difference.”
