Aiden Markram made the most of the chance to bat to score his second century on this tour (100 retired hurt) and take South Africa to 199 for four at close of the second day’s play against Board President's XI at the Dr. PVG Raju Sports Complex here on Friday.

Bad light stopped play immediately after captain Faf du Plessis was trapped leg before by left-arm spinner Dharmendrasinh Jadeja, 90 minutes before the scheduled close of play.

Delayed start

After a wet outfield delayed the start, action finally began at 12.10 and opener Markram was off the blocks in a hurry, dispatching fast bowler Umesh Yadav for three fours in his second over.

Relishing the ball coming into him, the in-form opener was more comfortable and confident than a hesitant Dean Elgar.

Umesh's new-ball partner Shardul Thakur was more impressive, making the batsmen hurry onto the backfoot with a far more accurate line. However, it was Umesh who provided the first breakthrough, squaring up southpaw Elgar and forcing him to snick to gully.

It was interesting to see captain Rohit Sharma check with Umesh whether he was happy with the slip cordon and the bowler responded in style.

Though Theunis de Bruyn was trapped in front by pacer Ishan Porel and Jadeja struck with his second ball to have Zubayr Hamza lbw on the shuffle, Markram and Temba Bavuma served a reminder of their potential to counter the Indian bowlers in conditions alien to them and also on a very hot and humid day.

Bavuma showed his ability to adjust to the pace and bounce of the pitch with his confident back-foot play.

Confident

Markram, meanwhile, was confidence personified, not hesitating to use his feet against the spinners. He was especially harsh on Jadeja — carting him for a couple of sixes over long-on. He also managed to pick the gaps on the offside off the pacers with superb timing.

The scores:

South Africa — 1st innings: Aiden Markram (retd. hurt) 100, Dean Elgar c Panchal b Umesh 6, Theunis de Bruyn lbw b Porel 6, Zubayr Hamza lbw b Jadeja 22, Temba Bavuma (batting) 55, Faf du Plessis lbw b Jadeja 9; Extras (lb-1): 1. Total (for four wkts. in 50 overs): 199.
