The tourists were forced to make two changes to their team after injuries to batsman Rohit Sharma and spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.

Australia captain Tim Paine won the toss and elected to bat first in the second test against India at Perth Stadium on Friday.

India, who won the first test in Adelaide to take a 1-0 lead in the four-test series, decided to field four seamers and no specialist spinner. The tourists were forced to make two changes to their team after injuries to batsman Rohit Sharma and spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.

Hanuma Vihari, who offers some part-time spin, returns to the side for Rohit in the middle order, while paceman Umesh Yadav comes in for Ashwin.

Paine said that Australia would send out a side unchanged from that which lost the series-opener by 31 runs.

A gargantuan black forest cake with a vanilla topping, that’s the first impression that springs to mind when the Optus Stadium looms ahead while the taxi ferrying cricket writers draws close to the venue.

Perth’s latest cricketing venue, the ultra-modern successor to the more traditional WACA, is set for its maiden five-day match when India and Australia clash in the second Test here from Friday.

WACA head curator Brett Sipthorpe on Thursday unveiled a green top for the maiden Test at the new Opus Stadium, saying ‘he is trying to produce the bounciest wicket he can’ for the second match between India and Australia.

Keeping with tradition at the good old WACA, a raging quick wicket has been laid for this inaugural five-day game. It has a healthy layering of grass which could impact strategies for both sides.
