Presentation:

Rohit collects the IPL trophy. Sea of blue and confetti at the stadium.

That's it from us here. Thank you for joining us. Goodnight!

Rohit Sharma: "I was quite nervous. Great effort to defend 130 and I was expecting the guys to do it because we have a great set of bowlers. We knew the wicket was not easy. We wanted to save as many runs as possible. Having Lasith and Bumrah in your side they make your job easier. Our spinners have bowled very well. This IPL title was probably the toughest."

Steve Smith: "Hard pill to swallow. Proud of the boys.  130 was a little under par. Was a tough wicket to get the ball away. There were one or two really good overs. It's been a fantastic ride. Great fun being captain. Not the fairytale finish we were after. "

Krunal Pandya is the Man  of the Match : "I'm glad I contributed the last two games. I wanted to play till the 19th-20th over. The wicket was on the slower side. It's all about preparation. I give all credit to (physio) Nitin Patel. 5-6 matches back I was injured."

Plenty of awards being given out. This is exceeding everybody's bedtime. If you show up late on Monday morning, you know who to blame it on.

-----------------------

Mumbai Indians win their third IPL title by one run. They reversed the jinx against Pune Supergiant, having lost three games to them this season. After ten seasons, this HAS to be the most thrilling final of them all.

I don't know what Rohit told the guys at the second huddle but whatever it was, it worked. The way Rohit charged off after the final moment - I doubt we've ever seen him this animated. Steve Smith on the other hand was glued to his seat in disbelief. That shot in the final over just lacked elevation. Had it gone for six, RPS would have taken this one surely.

Do stay with us for the presentation.

----------- ------------

A run out off the last ball! Christian tries to heave this down to deep midwicket, Krunal dived at deep square leg, fumbled, the batsmen had just completed the second but went for the third anyway to tie the game but the throw was too good to the batsman's end. Christian was run out .

DROPPED - Christian whips that away to deep midwicket, Hardik falls forward and spills it! 4 needed off 1

Dan Christian on strike

What can 17 year old Washington Sundar do? RPS have two men at the crease who haven't faced a single ball.

Yorker! Fails to dig that

WICKET - Tiwary holes out to long-on! What have we here? Looked like the slower ball and he tried to go big, taken comfortably by Pollard.

WICKET - Smith goes! This is getting thrilling by the second! He made room to scoop this over deep extra cover and Rayudu was there to catch that.

And the first ball is swung away by Tiwary down to deep square leg for four! He fetched that from the off stump.

Johnson to bowl the final over!

Bumrah bowls the 19th. The first ball is in the air and Smith survives as the ball drops short of deep midwicket. Just singles off the next three and then Smith smashes a six down to long-off! The last ball is a full toss that is forced to the deep on the on side. Smith was hoping that would be a waist high no ball. Nope.

18 overs - RPS 107/3 (Smith 41, Tiwary 2)

Over No. 18 bowled by Malinga. Smith hits straight to cover. Tiwary scampers a single, the field is up. A fantastic yorker goes between Smith's legs. Top class bowling. Smith then shuffles early and whips it away with conviction and beats fine leg. Top placement. Ends the over with a single. 23 needed off the last two!

Smith could have pushed for two but wants to retain strike.

There was a very close shout for lbw by Bumrah to Tiwary. It was pad first but hitting just outside the line of the off stump. Good decision by umpire S Ravi

WICKET - 16.2 overs - RPS 98/3

Dhoni goes edging to the keeper! It was outside off and coming back in. Dhoni was a bit too early on the shot. Mumbai are perked up now. Is this a twist?

Dhoni c Parthiv b Bumrah 10

16 overs - RPS 97/2 (Smith 33, Dhoni 10). Target 130

I think I spoke way too soon! Seconds after writing that Pune had not tried anything innovative, Smith plays a switch hit off Krunal for six! Shortly before that, a short ball from Krunal was cut away by Dhoni wide of point.

Interestingly, Pune have not tried any innovative shots like the ramp shot, reverse sweep.

Rohit gets his players in a huddle during the time out.

15 overs - RPS 83/2 (Smith 25, Dhoni 4). Target 130

Mumbai have spread the field out a bit. Maling bowling a tight over. A super yorker to Smith who plays all around it and nearly plays on to the stumps. Follows that up with a really wide ball outside off. Fine running off the last ball of the over. Played to deep point and what should have been a single became two. Parthiv was fuming. It's the time out

The required rate is climbing. Mumbai doing well to choke things up.

14 overs - RPS 77/2 (Smith 22, Dhoni 1)

A few quiet overs here is making it interesting. Krunal bowling stump to stump. Another appeal for a caught behind down leg. Take a couple off the final ball. Just 12 off the last 3 overs.

13 overs - RPS 73/2 (Dhoni 1, Smith 19). Target 130

There was a desperate appeal for an lbw by Karn against Dhoni. He was down the track, checked his shot and was hit on the base of the pad. He was far too much away from the stumps. Nevertheless, a quiet over.

12 overs - RPS 71/2 . Target 130

Big cheer for Dhoni as he walks in

WICKET - 11. 5 overs - RPS 71/2

The offcutter from Johnson claims Rahane. From round the wicket, a half hearted chip shot from Rahane, scoops it towards long-on where Pollard times his dive well and takes the catch

Rahane c Pollard b Johnson  44

11 overs - RPS 65/1 (Rahane 43, Smith 13). Target 130

Nothing going Mumbai's way. Rahane sweeps Krunal and it races towards fine leg. Simmons over-runs it and the ball beats him. Didn't time his dive well at all.

10 overs - RPS 58/1 (Rahane 38, Smith 12). Target 130

Johnson comes round the wicket to the right handers. Drags one a bit too short which Rahane pulls and finds the boundary at fine leg. Used the pace. Johnson ended the over well with a yorker to Smith

9 overs - RPS 50/1 (Rahane 30, Smith 11). Target 130

Only two from that over from Karn. Not much width either side for the batsmen to work with. This is good from Mumbai. Could frustrate the batsmen into hitting out.

8 overs - RPS 48/1 (Rahane 29, Smith 10). Target 130

Bumrah's bowling it at his normal pace but allowing singles by giving width. Rahane and Smith are dabbing it away easily wide of point and down to third man.

7 overs - RPS 43/1 (Rahane 26, Smith 8). Target 130

Karn is making sure he doesn't give away boundaries. Five off that over. What Mumbai  need is wickets

6 overs - RPS 38/1 (Rahane 25, Smith 5) Target 130

Chance for a run out! Rahane dabbed one towards backward point, set off, Smith was struggling and had Hardik's throw been on target Smith would have gone. Rahane then plays a delightful cover drive for four.

5 overs - RPS 32/1 (Smith 4, Rahane 20). Target 130

Shaping up to be a tidy over from Karn Sharma until he dropped one too short and was whipped away in the air towards the deep midwicket boundary, despairing dive.

4 overs - RPS 23/1, Target 130

DROPPED - Krunal drops a sitter! Slower ball from Malinga, Rahane played a very half hearted shot, he right hand came off the handle, stabbed it to short cover. Krunal had it covered and yet spilled it. Mumbai cannot afford to drop ANY

WICKET - 2.2 overs - RPS 14/1. Target 130

Early wicket for Mumbai and it's Tripathi who has to go! He was forward and playing close to the pad, the ball hit the top flap of the pad, Tripathi didn't look too happy and Hawkeye showed that was just clearing the stumps.

Tripathi lbw b Bumrah 3

2 overs - RPS 14/0 (Rahane 7,. Tripathi 3). Target 130

The last ball of the over from Johnson was straying on the pads and easily worked away past short fine leg

1 over - RPS 6/0. Target 130

Not surprisingly, Mumbai have started with spin. Krunal Pandya bowling left-arm spin. He's had a good time with the bat. Bowled one a bit too short and Rahane punched it well past extra cover for a boundary.

-----------------------------------------

At one stage it looked like Mumbai would be lucky to get to 100. Now 130 might seem well below par, but on this slow pitch, it could be competitive. If the Mumbai bowlers can bowl their slower balls and mix it up well, it could be a struggle for Pune. The game's not over. We will be back shortly for the chase.

20 overs - Mumbai Indians 129/8 (Pandya 47, Rohit 24, Unadkat 2-19)

Krunal swipes a length ball to deep square leg for a boundary. Christian bowls one a bit too wide. Another slower ball from Christian is smashed over the sightscreen. What a valuable innings this might be from Krunal. The score inching towards 130. The final ball is short and pulled but Krunal miscues it to Rahane at deepish midwicket

Krunal Pandya c Rahane b Christian 47

19 overs - Mumbai Indians 115/7 (Krunal 36, Johnson 12)

More slower balls from Unadkat in his final over. The two batsmen looking to pull. He bowls one a bit too full and Krunal lofts and clears wide long-on for a six. Some relief there for MI.

18 overs - Mumbai Indians 105/7

A boundary after eons! Six this time from Mitch. It was a bit short from Christian and Johnson played across the line and the ball just cleared long-on. Then a slower bouncer which Johnson tried to upper cut, they scamper a run and a direct hit at the bowler's end would have sent back Johnson. The over ends with a ferocious boundary cut to deep point

17 overs - Mumbai Indians 92/7 (K Pandya 23, Johnson 3)

Unadkat mixing his pace well. Krunal tried to pull slower ball but ended up getting an under edge that dipped and dropped short of Dhoni. Then the next was a quicker one that was mistimed past the bowler. Six off that over and no boundaries.

16 overs - MI 86 for 7

Just five runs off that over from Christian. MI need boundaries and plenty. Even getting 100 looks a struggle.

15 overs - Mumbai Indians 81/7 (K Pandya 16, Johnson 1)

WICKET - 14.1 overs - Mumbai Indians 79/7

And we have yet another run out! Brilliant stuff from Christian and Thakur. It was an outside edge that went to Christian's left at slip. He took it but the ball slipped out. He gathered the ball quickly and threw it back at the stumps at the striker's end, seeing that Sharma was a long way off the crease, Thakur had the presence of mind to run to the stumps, gather the throw and break the stumps. Karn Sharma had set off and had to scamper back

Karn Sharma run out 1

14 overs - Mumbai Indians 79/6

The new man Karn Sharma fishes outside the off stump and he's beaten. Mumbai all at sea.

WICKET - 13.2 overs - Mumbai Indians 78/6

Dan Christian joins the wicket-taking fun. He doesn't want to get left behind. Hardik tries to work the ball to the on side, the ball straightened and hit him high up on the pad and the umpire was convinced that was hitting.

H Pandya lbw b Christian 10

13 overs - Mumbai Indians 76/5 (K Pandya 15, H Pandya 8)

Hardik starts off with a lofted six over deep extra cover off Zampa. The Pandya brothers have to clean up the mess left by the top order.

12 overs - Mumbai 66/5 (K Pandya 13, H Pandya 0)

Just one run off Washington's final over. He finishes with just 13 runs conceded off his four overs. Well done again.

WICKET - 10.6 ov - Mumbai 65/5

Two for the over for Zanpa and he gets the big man Pollard this time! Pollard had earlier hit his first ball for an effortless six several rows over long-off. He tried something similar three balls later, this time aiming for a straight six. But nope. Tiwary was there close to long-on.

Pollard c Tiwary b Zampa 7

WICKET - 10.1 overs - Mumbai Indians 56/4

Six or out? The latter, because Shardul Thakur just managed to keep his boot off the rope at the deep. Well-judged catch to dismiss Rohit. It was short and pulled to deep midwicket, Thakur pedalled backwards after taking the catch, looked back and was convinced it was clean and the third umpire had a look too.

Rohit c Thakur b Zampa 24

10 overs - Mumbai Indians 56/3

The ball isn't turning but the slowness of the pitch has made scoring tough. Sundar keeps it tight bowling to the stumps. But off the last ball Krunal chips it over cover, beats the diving fielder in the deep and a boundary at last.

9 overs - Mumbai Indians 50/3 (Rohit 23, Krunal 5)

Another tidy over, just four off it from Zampa. It's also the strategic time out. Rohit and Krunal have to pick up the pace.

8 overs - 46/3 (Rohit 22, Krunal 3)

We nearly had a second run out for the over after Rayudu's dismissal. Krunal Pandya set off for a third run after pushing one towards deep midwicket. Rohit sent him back. The throw was to the wrong end initially.

WICKET - 3.2 overs - 41/3

Direct hit at the bowler's end! Rayudu drives a low full toss towards mid-off and sets off for a risky single, he stretches his bat but Smith's throw is too accurate for Rayudu's liking. Third umpire has a look, easy decision

Rayudu run out (Smith) 12

7 overs - Mumbai 41/2 (Rohit 21, Rayudu 12)

The legspinner Zampa now. Bowls one a bit too short and Rayudu this time finds the boundary just wide of backward point. Tries to hoick one away to the leg side and gets an inside edge. Another slog finds the fielder in the deep.

6 overs - Mumbai 32/2 (Rohit 20, Rayudu 4)

The introduction of the pacy Lockie Ferguson finally brings a clump  of boundaries for Mumbai. The first is delicately driven off the front foot wide of point by Rohit. He then flicks the second wide of the diving short fine leg. The third was a bit streaky, an outside edge past the keeper. The fourth - class. Driven with conviction past cover.

5 overs - Mumbai 16/2 (Rayudu 4, Rohit 4)

After 5 overs and Mumbai still can't find the boundary. Tight over from Shardul Thakur, replacing Unadkat. Rohit tried piercing the off side field. This pitch is a bit slow.

4 overs - Mumbai Indians 11/2 (Rayudu 2, Rohit 2)

There was a stumping appeal. Rayudu was beaten outside the off stump off the off spinner Washington. His foot was just behind the line. Keeping it tight here.

3 overs - Mumbai Indians 9/2

WICKET - 2.4 overs - Mumbai Indians 8/2

Brilliance from Unadkat! What an IPL he is having. Simmons was probably caught off guard by the slowness of the pitch, his bat turned on impact and he ended up lobbing it back towards the bowler. Unadkat dived to his left and caught it inches off the pitch.

Simmons c and b Unadkat 3

WICKET - 2.1 overs - Mumbai Indians 7/1

The frustration gets to Parthiv as he tries to hit out. He tries to pull Unadkat and clear mid-on but mistimes it and a simple catch to Thakur.

Parthiv c Thakur b Unadkat 4

2 overs - Mumbai Indians 7/0 (Parthiv 4*, Simmons 3*)

The 17 year old spinner from Chennai Washington Sundar is called on straightaway. He took three wickets against Mumbai last time. Parthiv tries to make room to cut. He failed to beat the field twice but managed to squeeze one past cover for a couple. Inside edge off the final ball. Tidy from Washington.

1 over - Mumbai Indians 3/0

Unadkat bowled a few slower balls in his opening over. One went a few bounces to the keeper. Quiet start for Mumbai

19.15 : Good evening everybody and welcome to The Hindu's live coverage of the IPL 2017 final. Hyderabad, winners last year, get to host the final this time. Sadly for the Hyderabad folk, the Sunrisers came close but failed to make the final. It's Mumbai Indians v Rising Pune Supergiant .

----------------------------------------------------

Preview

After ten seasons of the IPL it comes down to this - Mumbai Indians, two-time winners, taking on the team from next door, Rising Pune Supergiant. I don't know how many predicted a 'Maharashtra Derby' for the final though, especially after RPS's insipid start to the season. What we have is this - the season's most consistent team taking on the most improved side.

Mumbai certainly have a score to settle with their neighbours. Mumbai have lost all three games to Pune this season, the most recent coming in the first Playoff. Mumbai had a second chance and this time they decimated Kolkata Knight Riders in a low-scoring game in Bengaluru to set up their third date with Pune. Can Pune retain their unbeatable head-to-head against Mumbai for the final, or will they choke? Yes, the c-word every team hates to utter. The South African cricket team must be sick of it. It won't be incorrect to say that RPS will be feeling the heat just a bit more.

Let's just remind ourselves that this will, in all probabibility, be RPS's final IPL game as a franchise. The deal was for two years only, so next year (unless the IPL governing council does an about-turn) both Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals will return and RPS and Gujarat Lions will make way. Will make for a delicious sporting story if RPS can sign off with the title. And they have a man who knows a thing or two about being in IPL final - MS Dhoni prepares for his 7th final, the other six coming for CSK.

If Mumbai win this, it will be their third title. No other team has won three or more IPL titles. Mumbai have benefited due to valuable contributions from Indian players like Parthiv Patel, Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Nitish Rana, Jasprit Bumrah. We haven't even come to Kieron Pollard and Mitchell McClenagahan yet.

Our man in Hyderabad, Joseph Antony, has this preview. Read here.

---------------------------------------------

Road to the final

Mumbai lost their opening game to RPS but they won their next six games. They lost to their 'bogey team' RPS again, then won an one-over eliminator game against Gujarat Lions, and the next two. They lost their next two, beat KKR before the Playoffs.

Rising Pune Supergiant lost three of their first four games and it looked like last season's story would repeat. But there was a surprise in store. RPS won seven of their next eight games to become serious Playoff contenders. They lost to Delhi, then beat Kings XI before the Playoffs.
