Indian Premier League 2014

I am surprised batsmen haven’t figured me out already: Narine

In keeping with his demure nature, Sunil Narine – who turned 26 this week – had a low-key birthday celebration, with his Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) teammates arranging a cake.

Acquired by KKR in 2012, he instantly had a talismanic effect, helping the team win its maiden IPL crown. This year again, the purveyor of ‘mystery’ deliveries has been leading KKR’s bowling pack.

In an e-mail interview with The Hindu, Narine spoke about what makes him tick, not succeeding in Test cricket, and his calm demeanour.

Why do batsmen find you so hard to score runs off? Is it more to do with your accuracy or variations?

I am not really sure [about the] why bit [but] I am glad that they do. I do try and be accurate more often as that’s always the key. Variations in this format are always a very good option to have as they have the batsmen guessing.

Despite the variations, do you ever fear that batsmen will eventually figure out your style? How do you counter that?

Sometimes I am surprised that they already haven’t with all the technology available nowadays. I do not fear that though as I only concentrate on working harder and just focus on trying to do my bit as best as I can.

What do you do to improve upon your accuracy?

You need to work hard and keep training at the nets. That is the only way I feel I can improve on it.

Why do you think you haven’t been as successful in Tests as in limited-overs cricket?

It’s something I am still trying to learn and understand. I am sure if I work hard at it and continue to get opportunities I will get better at bowling in that format. Endurance and patience are the key [factors] in Tests.

What are your thoughts on Darren Sammy’s retirement from Test cricket and the new Test captain Denesh Ramdin?

I would not like to comment on Sammy’s retirement as it is a personal decision. Ramdin is a good captain. He has captained Trinidad and Tobago for a while now and has a good understanding of the game.

Tell us about what you like best about the KKR set up.

The entire team is like one big family and this makes it truly special for me. [There are] special moments like winning the trophy in 2012.

Do you have specific ambitions for yourself and the West Indies team?

To be a regular in the team in all formats and try to bring success to the Caribbean.

Has your father met his hero, Sunil Gavaskar, after whom you were named?

No, he has not.

How does Sunil Narine stay so calm on the field? Is he any different off it?

I am just like that on and off the field. I like to remain calm at all times as that is my nature.
