Left-arm spinner Harmeet Singh, who has been let off because of lack of evidence in the IPL spot-fixing and corruption case, will not be an automatic choice in the Mumbai team for the Ranji Trophy.
Mumbai selection committee chairman Sudhir Naik said Harmeet had to play in local club tournaments. “He has to perform,” said former India Test opener Naik.
The two left-arm spinners in the 30 probables announced are Vishal Dabholkar and Iqbal Abdulla.
Despite off-spinner Ramesh Powar having decided to move to Rajasthan, the young spinner may find it tough to get a look-in.
“There is no question about it. I have to play club cricket here and compete with the others. My fate is in my hands when it comes to taking wickets and then selection. I am ready for the challenge,” Harmeet told The Hindu.
Harmeet is keen to get down to business. His first match for Shivaji Park Gymkhana could come up next Saturday (Sept. 21), but it depends on whether he decides to play a club tournament in Malaysia next week.
“I have not decided, the Kanga League next Saturday is important,” said Harmeet.
Harmeet has not played for nearly five months. His last competitive match (for Rajasthan Royals) was against Pune Warriors at Pune on April 11, 2013. He dismissed Ross Taylor and finished with one for 34 in four overs.
“Since that match I only practised with the Royals team in the IPL. Once I am back on the field, nothing will stop me,” said Harmeet, who turned 21 on September 7 and hopes for a bright future.
