Thanks IPL franchises that vested faith in his abilities

“The double century against England-A in the 2004 Duleep Trophy match was the best moment of my life.

“It gave me the kind of recognition I was looking for and pushed my case for a slot in the Indian team,” says Y. Venugopala Rao, who announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Tuesday.

‘No regrets’

“I have no regrets and clearly enjoyed my long career, for which I am grateful to the Andhra Cricket Association,” he told The Hindu on Tuesday.

“Coming from such a small place like Gajuwaka in Visakhapatnam and going on to play for the country is a journey I will cherish forever,” he said.

“I am also grateful to the IPL franchise owners of Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Daredevils for giving me that kind of platform and especially to V.V.S. Laxman who is like my elder brother,” he said.

He also said he owed a lot in his career to MRF, Chennai.

“At MRF I had the chance to face some of the best fast bowlers in the nets and that helped me improve as a batsman,” he said.

“And, I am still associated with MRF even after two decades and am really grateful to them,” he said.

“One day it (cricketing career) had to come to an end. Right now, I’m not sure what I can do post-retirement.”
