De Villiers receives two-match ban

January 20, 2013 04:32 pm | Updated 04:32 pm IST - PAARL, South Africa

South Africa captain AB de Villiers will miss the rest of the one-day series against New Zealand after being suspended for two games for a slow over-rate.

Faf du Plessis will replace De Villiers as skipper after Hashim Amla asked not to be considered, while batsman David Miller was called in to South Africa’s squad.

The International Cricket Council said De Villiers accepted the sanction after the Proteas’ one-wicket loss in the series-opener in Paarl on Saturday.

South Africa’s players also were fined 100 per cent of their match fees from the game at Boland Park.

South Africa head selector Andrew Hudson said losing De Villiers “is obviously a big blow to us.”
