The good old rivalry between the city’s champion clubs of yesteryears - Dadar Union and Shivaji Park - will be relived at the Dadar Union pitch at the Major Veer Dadkar Udyan, Matunga on Christmas day. Dilip Vengsarkar, who has taken the initiative, said it will be a ten-over match. Sunil Gavaskar, is the most famous Dadar Union player, but he is in Australia. The match though will feature one of India’s famous cricket coaches and a Dadar Union loyalist Vasu Paranjape and former India captain and Shivaji Park’s famous cricketing sons, Ajit Wadekar.
“The players who played against each other in the 60s and 70s would participate in the match. It would be an opportunity for all the cricket lovers of Mumbai to watch the likes of Ajit Wadekar, Vasu Paranjape, Madhav Apte, Padmakar `Paddy’ Shivalkar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Milind Rege, Sudhakar Adhikari, Ajit Pai, Abdul Ismail and Urmikant Modi in whites. The idea behind this is to enable the players bond with each other after a gap of almost 40-50 years and reminisce the good old days,’’ said Vengsarkar.
