We have a good team: Gibbs

Herschelle Gibbs was all effervescence, a strong trait that reflects in his batting too, as he spoke about the Cape Cobras’ prospects in the Airtel Champions League.

“We have a good team and a lot of the guys have been around for a while but this is Twenty20 and anything can happen,” Gibbs said and flipped pressure back onto rivals Royal Challengers Bangalore, as he added: “I think Royal Challengers will be one of the favourites.”

Gibbs spoke to the media after launching ‘Karbonn’ mobile handsets here on Wednesday.

Gibbs also displayed a sense of diplomacy when asked about playing under Andrew Puttick’s captaincy. “Puttick has been with the team for eight to nine years and he knows all the guys while players like me and Graeme Smith don’t often turn out for the Cobras as we are busy playing for South Africa. To be honest I don’t want to be the captain and all I want is to be an influential player,” Gibbs said.

Gibbs, who played for Deccan Chargers in the Indian Premier League, said that he would have loved to play for the Hyderabad side. “Look it was not under my control. I would have loved to play for them but Chargers did not pay the money for Cobras to release me.

“In the end all of us play each other often in varying conditions and I guess we know most of the players out here. As I said earlier it is about the team performing well on a given day that wins matches,” Gibbs said besides praising the razor-sharp fielding skills of his team-mate Sybrand Engelbrecht.

“He is a wonderful athlete and as for fielding at cover-point, I guess I will continue there,” Gibbs said and laughed his way past the milling media.
