Pakistan coach Waqar Younis is not happy in the manner in which the PCB has been pestering Javed Miandad to take up the job of a batting consultant when the legendary batsman is not too keen on it.
“Why do we keep going round and round the same thing? Javed bhai was also offered this position last year, and now once more. But if he can’t do it because of lack of time or for any other reason, then we should look at other options,” an upset Waqar told the media at the conclusion of the national camp today.
Miandad has again turned down an offer to become batting coach but showed up at the national camp for two days to work with some of the players.
“I don’t say much but if anyone wants to access my performance as coach I think they can look at the results of the team in the last 12—13 months. The results speak for themselves. My job is to get the best out of the players and that is what I am doing,” he said.
The former fast bowler also cautioned against taking the coming series against the West Indies lightly.
“They have new players but they have always been a tough opponent in their own backyard. It is a good opportunity for the youngsters in the side to impress and do well. Our aim should be to try to win the series comprehensively,” he said.
He, however, admitted that the batting remained an area of concern.
“At the top level, it is not that much about technique, but rather about being mentally strong to handle the pressure and get set in.”
Pakistani selectors have dropped senior players like Kamran Akmal, Younis Khan, Abdul Razzaq for the coming series and have included four new faces in the one—day squad that leaves early Thursday morning for the Caribbean.
Waqar has also called for an early revival of bilateral cricket series with India.
The former captain pointed out that the reaction of the Pakistani people after the World Cup semi—final against India was a good indication that the people wanted to see the two teams playing against each other regularly.
“I think bilateral series between Pakistan and India must be revived as soon as possible,” Waqar said.
