Former Indian test captain Anil Kumble has been appointed as the head coach of Team India for one year.
This was announced by BCCI president Anurag Thakur after the Board’s working committee meeting held in Dharamsala. In terms of coaching, Kumble has mentored IPL teams Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians.
"It’s a huge responsibility, (I am) ready to take this role. Coaches come later, it’s always players first. Strategy will be to win. I have a short and long plan for the upcoming series, but I cannot plan alone; need players to pitch in," said the new head coach, fondly nicknamed Jumbo, immediately after the announcement.

Here are some of his milestones and moments from his 18-year-career
Kumble, one of India’s greatest match-winners, made his Test debut on August 9, 1990 against England at Manchester’s Old Trafford.
The leg-spinner's debut also marked a milestone for another great — the Old Trafford test was the match of Sachin Tendulkar's maiden test century.
Kumble is India's highest wicket-taker in Tests, and the third-highest overall, with 619 wickets, including a best of 10 for 74 against Pakistan in Delhi in 1999.
One of the biggest highlights of Anil Kumble’s glittering Test career was his Perfect 10 against Pakistan at the Kotla in 1999. This historic picture captures the legend celebrating after scalping Wasim Akram as the final victim. In a 2002 test match against West Indies, Kumble bowled with a fractured jaw courtesy a bouncer from Merv Dillon. He bowled 14 consecutive overs and also dismissed Brian Lara with the broken jaw.

He is India’s greatest match-winning bowler with 956 international wickets (619 in Tests and 337 in ODIs)

Allan Lamb, a file photo. His maiden century came — much, much later after his 1990 debut — in 2007 during the third and final test at the Oval during India's tour of England. He was also India's only centurion during the entire tour, and this was a tour which had stalwarts like Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman playing.
After being appointed Test captain in November 2007, Kumble led India in 14 matches until his retirement a year later.
The infamous > 'monkey-gate' incident was one of the biggest scandals to rock the cricket fraternity — an incident during which Kumble was the captain of the Indian cricket team. With Andrew Symonds and Harbhajan Singh having a go at each other, it was left to Kumble to patch things up. After matters took a turn for the worst with Bhajji being handed a match-ban, Kumble is known to have said at the post-match test conference: “Only one team played in ‘Spirit of Game’."
He played for Royal Challengers Bangalore for four IPL seasons, leading the team for three season. After his retirement in 2012, he was the chief mentor for RCB and the Mumbai Indians.
