The serenity in A.R. Rahman makes him an ocean of calm amidst all the turmoil of modern day living. The ‘Mozart of Madras’ conjures music that soothes one’s senses.

The often combustible Virat Kohli, in contrast, does not hide his emotions on the cricketing arena. But then, the marauder from Delhi makes music too, when he strikes the ball from the middle of his willow.

Both these giants, in a rare unison, shared their thoughts even as the shutterbugs got busy in the city here on Monday.

Someone who keeps his words simple but delivers a strong message, Rahman said, “Music is a unifying force.”

Whether Futsal, a five-a-side indoor football game of 40 minutes, would become popular, a smiling Rahman replied, “The spirit is there, it will catch on.” He comprehends the rhythm of life, incorporates those elements in his music.

The two will be teaming up — Rahman will compose the anthem for Premier Futsal while Kohli will be among the singers — for what should be a rocking single that will be released on June 20. The tournament will commence from July 15.

Kohli made no secret of his admiration for Rahman. “So many iconic songs, so many of my childhood memories are associated with Rahman’s music. It has been a wonderful journey with him.”

The Indian Test captain said jokingly, “Sitting next to Rahman is more intimidating than anything I have faced on a cricket field. There is so much more pressure!”

Talking about the Rahman effect on the Indian cricket team, Kohli said, “We have the National Anthem at the start. Then, towards the end, when we are winning the one thing that lifts us on the field is when the crowd starts singing Rahman’s version of Vande Mataram.”

Rahman’s bond with Chennai was visible when he invited Rohit Ramesh, the owner of Premier Futsal’s Chennai franchise, to the stage. Rohit owns Chennai City FC in the city’s senior division league.

Xavier Britto, chairman and chief investor, and Dinesh Raj, Managing Director, Premier Futsal, spoke on the occasion. The matches will be aired and streamed live on Sony’s platforms.

As the event drew to a close, Rahman said. “I want to reach out to an audience beyond movies.” Kohli too explores fresh frontiers.

Music and cricket do bring people together. Rahman the composer, Kohli the singer, play on!
