An intervention by the Cricket Association of Bengal president Jagmohan Dalmiya persuaded Prabir Mukherjee, the curator of the Eden Gardens, to stay back at his post on Saturday.

With the third Test match of the India-England series just four days away 83-year-old Mukherjee expressed his unwillingness to continue in his position to the CAB officials earlier in the morning.

The CAB treasurer and the former joint secretary Biswarup Dey went to meet the veteran curator, who communicated his reluctance to continue citing health reasons.

Mukherjee also told reporters that he was not willing to continue in the present state which does not allow him to function freely. The curator expressed his discomfort to the CAB officials at the way a particular line of thinking was forced on him.

The issue was taken to the CAB president Mr. Dalmiya, who summoned a meeting at his residence in the afternoon. Mukherjee agreed to continue on the persuasion of the president and also visited the Eden Gardens, where he was seen talking jovially to the office bearers while overseeing the preparations.

Mukherjee had welcomed Asish Bhowmick, the BCCI grounds and pitches committee member from East Zone, who was asked by the national body to oversee the preparations. But just two days into the joint operation, the veteran curator decided to take a break.

“He (Mukherjee) said he would not be able to come because of health reasons. I did not get any letter of resignation from him,” Mr. Dalmiya said after Mukherjee agreed to stay back.

“There was no issue at all. We have sorted out the differences. Prabir Mukherjee was the Eden Gardens curator and he will continue to remain in charge,” the CAB president added.
