Australia’s test players returned to training with their state colleagues on Wednesday while awaiting the possible cancellation of a two-match tour of Bangladesh due to security concerns.

Cricket Australia security staff were expected to brief the federal government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade on Wednesday, after returning from meeting with Bangladesh officials in Dhaka.

The foreign affairs department, citing intelligence about possible militant attacks on Australian interests, blocked Australia’s squad from departing on Monday for the two tests beginning October 9 in Chittagong and October 17 in Dhaka and a three-day tour match to begin Saturday.

Security concerns increased on Monday when an Italian citizen was shot to death by a gunman on a motorcycle while walking in Dhaka’s diplomatic zone. The militant group Islamic State later claimed responsibility.
