Mahendran Memorial Sports Club will conduct a city-level schools basketball tournament from Wednesday at the Corporation ground, Nungambakkam. The four semifinalists from the competition — 24 teams will take part — will feature in a State-level inter-school tournament here from July 16 to 21.

‘Lost in the Sea, Alive in the Grounds’ will be the theme of the competition in memory of Coimbatore-born V. Mahendran, former State varsity player and officer in Chennai Customs, who lost his life in mid-sea while discharging official duties. The tournament began in 1984.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, K.S. Narayanan, president of the club, spoke about an “emotional” connect with the tournament and the need for the youngsters to learn to work as a team and not function as individuals.

The tournament winner will receive Rs. 12,000, while the runner-up will take home Rs. 8,000. There will be various other awards for the deserving.
