Suspended athletes asked to vacate SAI centre

March 24, 2012 11:43 pm | Updated 11:43 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

The six suspended female 400m runners, Mandeep Kaur, A.C. Ashwini, Sini Jose, Jauna Murmu, Priyanka Panwar and Tiana Mary Thomas, have been asked to vacate the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Northern Regional Centre at Sonepat.

The athletes were training there following the one-year suspensions for doping rule violations imposed on them last December.

Following media reports that the SAI had extended the facility in violation of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Code and the UNESCO Convention against Doping in Sports, the Union Sports Ministry had advised the SAI not to fund the athletes.

Even as officials were trying to debate whether the rules actually barred an organisation from extending a training facility, as different from giving financial assistance, the ministry is learnt to have put an end to the argument conveying a firm ‘no' to the athletes.
