Javelin thrower Amit Kumar provisionally suspended

Javelin thrower Amit Kumar, who came third in the National inter-State athletics championships in Guwahati last month, has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Federation of India after testing positive for a banned substance.

In an out-of-competition test conducted by the Athletes Integrity Unit (AIU) of the International Associations of Athletics Federations (IAAF) during a training camp in Finland, Amit tested positive for a testosterone.

It is learnt that Amit, who failed to reach the Asian Games qualifying mark of 81m in Guwahati, had consumed a supplement, which he procured online, in Delhi prior to leaving for Finland.

The supplement, which the athlete didn’t mention in his dope control form, seemed to have contained the banned substance.

According to a National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) official, it would investigate the matter only if IAAF transferred the result management of the case to the Indian anti-doping agency.

He said it was up to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, which has a tie-up with NADA, to probe how such contaminated supplements are available in the Indian market.

“They have issued some regulations for the manufacturers so that the substances should be dope free,” he said.
