Athletics’ controlling body IAAF said Friday that two athletes had been provisionally suspended after failing a doping test at the recent world championships in Daegu.
In a statement the IAAF said that Portuguese long distance runner Sara Moreira, as well as sprinter Lim Hee Nam from South Korea had tested positive for the prohibited stimulant, methylhexaneamine.
“Both findings have been confirmed by B sample analysis and both athletes provisionally suspended pending the outcome of their respective disciplinary hearings, in accordance with IAAF Rules,” the organization said.
Moreira has won three gold medals at the European Cross Country Championships in the team event and a bronze medal over 5,000m at the European Athletics Championships in Barcelona last year.
She finished 12th in the 3,000m steeplechase in Daegu.
Lim ran in the Korean 4x100m relay which finished fifth in their heat.
The IAAF said that a total of 468 urine samples were collected as part of the IAAF’s standard World Championships testing programme, 41 samples out—of—competition and 427 samples in—competition.
At the championships the IAAF also took a blood sample from every athlete to create an Athlete Biological Passport, which will make future doping controls much easier.
IAAF president Lamine Diack said: “I am delighted to report that the testing programme in Daegu was an unprecedented success in terms of the number of samples collected.
“We can now look forward to the Olympic Games in London and we will be continuing to work as hard as ever to prevent doping in our sport”, he said.
