Chennai girl P.M. Thabitha clocked a personal best 13.86s to win gold in the girls' 100m hurdles in the Asian youth athletics championships in Hong Kong on Friday.

Confident

Thabitha’s coach P. Nagarajan said they had been confident she would win a medal.

"Last year’s gold winner had clocked 14.08s.

“Thabitha's personal best then was 14.02s (in the 2018 Youth Nationals in Vadodara),” Nagarajan said.

"She had done well in the heat, clocking 14s, despite the rain. I told her to aim for it (below-14s) in the final.

So, the timing is what's exceptional. A medal, as I said, was expected."

Nagarajan has been training the 17-year-old athlete at the St. Joseph's Sports Academy here for a long time.

"She used to have a slow start. That's something we've worked on and improved,” he said.

He said her next focus is the IAAF World under-18 championships, the venue and dates for which are yet to be announced.
