Ashish sets new National jr. hammer mark

Coimbatore: Ashish Jakhar of Haryana signed off on a merry note with a hammer throw gold in the boy’s section of the Sri Krishna Institutions 16th Federation Cup National junior athletics championship at the Nehru Stadium here on Sunday.

His mighty throw of 75.04m was strong enough to shatter the national mark of 71.53m set by Harvinder Singh in 2010.

A gold winner in the Asian junior championship at Vietnam two years ago, Ashish mastered the hammer much better than the rest in fray.

He showed an iron grip from the start. In his first attempt, he humbled the meet record with a throw of 71.60m. From there, he grew stronger and ended up with a heave of 75.04m in his fourth attempt for the gold and the new record.

And with most of the boys and girls coming up with such impressive performances, Haryana tallied 177.50 points and walked away with the overall championship.

The host State had to rest content for the second spot with 151.50 points. Triple jumpers Kamalraj and Priyadarshini completed Tamil Nadu’s engagements with two gold in their respective events.

Suman Rani (Punjab, girls 5000m) and Dhirendra Kumar (UP, boys pole vault) were the two other athletes who came up with new meet records on the final day.
