The government today said it has already lodged protest against Dow Chemicals being a sponsor of the London Olympics and will decide its next course of action later on.
“We have written to the IOA that it lodges protest with the International Olympic Committee. Through our High Commission in London and through IOA, we have already lodged protest. The Games are in July so we have plenty of time to think, what we have to do next,” Sports Minister Ajay Maken told reporters.
Dow Chemicals is now the parent company of Union Carbide, whose pesticide plant leaked gas into Bhopal in 1984, killing tens of thousands of people in the world’s worst industrial accident.
IOA has already written to the IOC and the London Olympics organisers to remove Dow Chemicals as the sponsors of the Games.
Meredith Alexander, Sustainability Commissioner to the 2012 Olympics, has quit her post in protest of the sponsorship deal.
Alexander was appointed by Mayor of London Boris Johnson to monitor the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG).
