As a long day wound to a close at the ITC Royal Gardenia Hotel, Gautam Gambhir emerged on top of the pile as he earned the highest price of $2.4 million from Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League player auction that commenced here on Saturday. Gambhir, who was the first player on the block, evoked a fierce bidding war between Mumbai Indians and Pune Warriors before Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kochi and Knight Riders stepped in and added spice to the proceedings. Eventually Knight Riders prevailed and snapped up the former Delhi Daredevils captain.
