Litigant blames CIA for Team India’s losses

The Bombay High Court has struck down a public interest litigation which blamed the U.S. intelligence agency for Team India's losses.

The Bombay High Court has struck down a public interest litigation which blamed the U.S. intelligence agency for Team India's losses.

In a bizarre accusation, U.S. spy agency CIA has now been blamed for too much cricket being played by Team India, leading to its humiliation in international matches.

“It is CIA mischief. It wants to humiliate our players in international matches,” a PIL filed in the Bombay High Court alleged, saying too much cricket was “tiring out” the young players and sought an inquiry against the Indian cricket board.

The plea was struck down by Chief Justice Anil Dave, who said, “It is not necessary. We are rejecting it.”

In his petition, a city-based lawyer Prabhakar Pradhan contended that the “CIA wants to defame and humiliate the Indian team” and sought a probe against the BCCI under the Commission of Inquiry Act.

Pradhan also argued that students got distracted because of frequent matches and their academics suffered. He said he could get his “friend” and former India captain Ajit Wadekar to file an affidavit in his support.

However, dismissing the petition out of hand, Dave said, “It is for the citizens to play (or not to play), or see the matches. When I was a student, I never watched matches when there were exams.”
