India’s former captain Anil Kumble wants one-day internationals cut to 40 overs per side.
The 50-over format is losing popularity following the advent of Twenty20 matches, which last about 3-1/2 hours.
England’s cricket board has decided to drop 50-over cricket from its domestic competitions, reducing it to 40-over games, with some commentators predicting the demise of 50-over cricket.
“I don’t think one-day internationals are going to get extinct, but there is a little bit of threat on the development of the format,” Press Trust of India quoted Kumble as saying Saturday.
India’s Sachin Tendulkar last week suggested that the 50-over matches be split into two innings per side to revive the format.
“You need such innovations as Sachin suggested, but my thought is to shorten one—day internationals from 50 to 40 overs,” said Kumble.
The ace spinner, who claimed 619 wickets in tests and 337 in one-day internationals during his 18-year career.
