Union Sports Minister M.S. Gill handed over a draft of Rs.3 lakh to Mrs. Sulinder Kaur, the wife of late Olympian Makkhan Singh, here on Wednesday.

The Ministry had approved the assistance from the National Welfare Fund for Sportspersons after knowing that the athlete’s family was living in miserable condition.

Makkhan Singh had won a 400m silver medal and was part of the gold winning in 4 x 400m relay team in the 1962 Jakarta Asian Games. He had participated in the 1964 Olympic Games as well. In the 1964 National Games, he had bagged the 400m gold by putting up a better performance than Milkha Singh, who had finished second.

Makkhan Singh was honoured with the Arjuna Award for the same year.
