Finnish tennis player, Jarkko Nieminen is fully prepared to pay his respects on court to Britain’s queen should he face Andy Murray in the presence of royalty at Wimbledon.
The Scot and his opponent from the northern European parliamentary democracy are tipped on Centre court Thursday as Queen Elizabeth II makes her first trip to the tennis in 33 years.
The last time she fronted, Virginia Wade claimed the women’s singles title for the nation.
The unassuming Nieminen is ready to go along the expected pomp and circumstance which will greet the presence of the country’s monarch.
But there is also the chance to spoil the home party.
“I understand Andy’s a big favorite but I’m gonna enjoy the situation. I have nothing to lose. I’m just gonna go out there and give my best,” said the number 67.
“Obviously it’s a great honour that the queen is coming — it’s a little extra motivation. I’m feeling good, healthy and will go out there and fight hard for the win.” The low-key Finn said that he won’t be distracted by the royal presence: “I guess there are some special things we do before the match.” And he added that if Scot Murray decides to bow to the Queen as the pair walk out onto court, he will go along.
