150,000 dollars bet over Federer’s seventh Wimbledon title

June 28, 2010 04:34 pm | Updated 04:34 pm IST - London:

A seventh Wimbledon title from Roger Federer would mean a payday of 150,000 dollars for British charity Oxfam through a bet from a late supporter.

Nicholas Newlife left his entire estate — and his future bets — to Oxfam. The wagers could pay up to 500,000 dollars in the best-case scenario over the next decade.

One of his bets of 2300 dollars picks Federer to win seven Wimbledons before the year 2020 at 66/1 odds. Should it happen this week, the payout out be in excess of 150,000 dollars.

But there’s no hurry on collecting as the wager does now fully expire for another nine years.

“In the event that he fails to win this year — and he is 6/4 favourite to do so — the bet does not run out until 2019,” said a spokesman for the William Hill betting firm. The charity is hoping to keep profiting from wagers made between 2000 and 2005. Proceeds of the payoffs were included in the will of the late punter who died in February, 2009, and are directed to Oxfam.

“Mr Newlife made arrangements in his will to pass any profit from his bet on to his favoured charity, Oxfam — a unique eventuality in our experience,” said a William Hill spokesman.

“We will, of course, be handing the profits from his far—sighted wager to them just as soon as Federer holds the trophy aloft for a seventh time.”
