Global Village 2018 : Blurring barriers

Global Village, an annual ritual across 70 countries, comes to Hyderabad

We live in a world that’s often labelled a ‘global village’, yet it’s ironical that we bear several pre-conceived notions about people from other countries. Global Village 2018, an event hosted by the youth leadership forum AIESEC in Hyderabad aims to blur such cultural divides among citizens of different countries through a mix of art, music, food and entertainment. Interns from ten countries who’ve stayed in India as part of a cultural exchange programme will voice their understanding of the country and talk about their roots through the event, busting various myths and elaborating on ground realities in their own quirky ways.

The lineup includes fun gaming activities, music, the event comes with the theme of ‘Around the world in 80 minutes’, featuring representatives from France, Czech Republic, Morocco, Turkey, Thailand, Egypt, Poland, Croatia and Indonesia, who will set up dedicated country booths highlighting their cultures. People showcase their nation also through dancing, customs, costumes through the day.

“The stalls by our interns will showcase the culture of the respective countries through souvenirs, local foods, facts and explain its differences with the Indian culture. Hyderabadis will get a deeper insight into the culture of other countries. The knowledge sharing happened with the interns too over the previous weeks; they got to explore the nook and corner of Hyderabad, understanding the cultural fabric of the city. The basic objective of this initiative is to reduce country/region-specific prejudices,” shares Puneeth, Core Committee Vice President, AIESEC Hyderabad.

AIESEC’s Global Village initiative has been an annual ritual across 70 countries for years, dwelling upon aspects like social sustainability, global awareness and cultural understanding. Live music sets by local performers, students, promise to entertain participants with their playlists. “The music is targeted more at the local crowds and is also expected to give other nationals, an opportunity to understand our roots,” Puneeth adds.
