Human beings experience the immediate world in which they live through the senses, mind, intellect and consciousness. They easily accept the experience of joy and sorrow of life as the normal trend without any further thought of the soul and its inherent nature and of the ultimate goal of life, pointed out Sri Gurunathan in a discourse. In the soul stirring hymns of pious saints such as Arunagirinathar or Kachiappa Sivachariar or Pamban Swamigal, Lord Muruga is hailed as the unfailing deity who comes to the aid of those who seek His grace and help with faith and sincerity. These saints have been direct recipients of the Lord’s grace and are always aware of His boundless compassion. The essence of the most profound philosophical truths found in the scriptures is presented in simple language that even the unlearned is able to grasp with ease. It eventually helps to clear the veil of ignorance cast by the Lord’s Maya.
When the truth of the inner atma hidden by the mind, senses and intellect is revealed, one begins to see the world and human existence through the eye of wisdom. One gains clarity about the real values in life and is initiated into cultivating the bhakti bhava. When Arunagirinathar expresses strong sentiments about the soul’s plight caught in samsara in his prayer to Muruga, he states that the Lord looks only for bhakti in the human heart. The saint asserts with faith that when one utters the name Muruga even once, it is sure that His grace flows towards that person. Those who chant these hymns with bhakti gradually gain fearlessness in this uncertain world and begin to yearn to see Him and to attain Him. Moreover, the desire for freedom from further births begins to take root in their consciousness and they find peace and solace in holding on to His feet.
