Taj Mahal on Saturday became one of the first historical monuments in the world to have a Twitter account of its own. The Mughal monument made its debut on the microblogging site with the State Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav launching the official Twitter handle @TajMahal on the Independence Day in Lucknow.

The irony of it all is that the historical launch could not be organised at Taj Mahal in Agra as desired by personnel associated with Twitter because of permission issue from the Archeological Survey of India, sources told The Hindu.

Hours after its Twitter debut, @TajMahal got thousands of followers and a new trend named #MyTajMemory began. Soon, many users tweeted pictures of their visit to the Taj, tagging the page.

Making its Twitter debut interesting, the page tweeted, "There are two kinds of ppl in the world. Those who have visited me and follow me here and those who haven't seen me and yet follow me here."
