The Gen Z’s social media engagement appears to be driven by visual content, according to a TCS survey of 12- to 18-year-olds. While Facebook (67%) continues to be the most popular social media platform, photo-sharing app Instagram(35%) is the next favourite.
According to the survey, conducted among 20,000 teens from 15 cities, the non-metro students are more active on Facebook than their metro counterparts and boys (70%) are more interested in it than girls (51%).
Interestingly, 11% of the girls said they do not log in to any social networking site. While 77% of those surveyed in Bhubaneswar said they were active on Facebook, Mumbaikars said they prefer Instagram (52%) more than Facebook.
Forty per cent of Bengaluru and Hyderabad students access Google+, making it the third most preferred social media application. Five per cent of teenage respondents said they have an account on LinkedIn, the professional networking service.
The survey also reveals that 75% of the students have made at least one friend through social media, with Facebook being the most popular tool. While most students use Facebook to connect with friends (36%), they also use the platform to interact with complete strangers (19%).
Girl actively follow their favourite film personalities (50%) on social media, while boys prefer sportspersons (52%) more. There is a growing fanfare for social media celebrities (35%) as well.
