The upcoming International Conference on Interventional Pain Management in Chennai, to be held between September 8 and 11, will focus on safety aspects in practice, according to organisers.
Pain medicine or algology has developed as a super-specialty in the West over the last 15 years or so, and is gaining prominence in India, Karthic Babu Natarajan, pain physician, Santosh Pain Clinic, said. These physicians are trained in management of acute and chronic painful conditions, and offer solutions, in consultation with the primary specialist.
The maximum number of cases is being referred by orthopaedicians, and comprise people with back pain. Neurophysicians and oncologists also refer a large number of patients to provide relief from pain, he added.
The intervention is carefully built on the diagnosis of the cause of the pain, and with involvement of multiple specialists, Ravi Krishna Kalathur, anaesthesiologist and pain specialist of Apollo Hospitals, explained.
The conference, organised by the World Institute of Pain, India, will be held at Chettinad Health City, Kelambakkam. National and international experts, numbering 400, are expected to participate, Dr. Karthic said.
