During summer, my hair becomes sticky and dull. Though I wash it daily, it remains like this.Aishwarya

After washing your hair, use a rinse. You can add the juice of a lemon to a mug of water and use it as a last rinse. Apply egg white for about 15 minutes before washing your hair. Weekly henna treatments will also help. Add 4 teaspoons each of lemon juice and coffee, 2 raw eggs and enough tea water to the henna powder, mixing it into a thick paste. Tea water can be made by boiling used tea leaves again in enough water, cooling and straining the liquid. Apply the henna on the hair; wash it off after an hour. If you do not wish to use egg, add more tea water.

I have rough feet and palms. I also have a big forehead.Nithya

Soaking your feet and hands in warm water will help soften the skin. Do this twice a week. After soaking, massage oil or cream into the skin. You can also massage your skin with sesame seed oil daily before a bath. Immediately afterwards, apply a body lotion or cream, while your skin is still damp. This helps seal in the moisture. For a wide forehead, you can sport a fringe. It can be a straight or side-swept. Fringes are in fashion nowadays.

What is ‘ubtan’? How is it used? Can I add multani mitti to it?Manisha

‘Ubtan’ is the name for a homemade face and body pack. It is usually made of ingredients such as wheat bran, gram flour, rice powder, yoghurt, cream of milk or milk and turmeric. All these are mixed together to form a paste. Multani mitti can also be added. First, massage the body with sesame seed oil or olive oil before a bath. Then the ‘ubtan’ may be applied and washed off after half-an-hour, while bathing. Nowadays, ready-to-use body scrubs are available, which serve the same purpose. But, one can do oil massage and apply traditional ‘ubtan’ with simple ingredients.

I am fair but have dark spots on my face.Abinaya

Apply a sunscreen with a high SPF before going out in the sun. Mix rice powder with curd and use it as a facial scrub once or twice a week. Apply it on the face, rubbing the skin gently with tiny circular movements, especially on the dark spots. Leave it on for a few minutes, before wash it off. Mix honey and lemon juice in equal quantities and apply it daily on your face. Wash it off after 15 minutes. Twice a week, apply a face mask. Mix 3 teaspoons of oatmeal with one teaspoon each of honey, curd and lemon juice, or egg white. Apply it on the entire face, avoiding the lips and the area around eyes. Wash it off after half-an-hour.

What should I do to avoid split ends? — Hema

Trimming the split ends is the only remedy. Give your hair proper and regular care. Avoid tying it tightly with rubber bands. Avoid hair dryers and brushes. Use a wide-toothed comb. Twice a week, heat pure coconut oil and apply it on your hair. Apply it on the ends too. Then dip a towel in hot water. Wring out the water, and use the towel as a wrap. Use a mild herbal shampoo. Use very little shampoo, taking care to rinse if off well. After a shampoo wash, lightly massage your hair with just a bit of creamy conditioner. Apply it on the ends too. Leave it on for two minutes, before rinsing it off. Or, apply a leave-in conditioner or hair serum. Apply it the same way, but do not rinse it off.

I have oily skin, acne pits and blackheads. Can I use an egg-white pack daily? I mix rice powder with curd and wash it off after it dries. My skin becomes reddish, so I apply aloe vera. Is this advisable?Namritha

Egg white helps oily skin. It has a cleansing action and reduces oiliness. Used in masks, egg white helps close the pores, tighten the skin and minimise marks and blemishes. Rice powder is more suitable for a scrub. If the skin turns red, it may because the scrub is too harsh on your skin. Mix egg white with oats and apply it on your face two or three times a week. It would discourage blackheads and open pores. Add a little lemon juice to egg white and apply it daily on your face. You can also apply aloe vera. It helps moisturise and soften the skin.
