New calendar imagines a ‘world without climate change’

A page from Lavazza’s 2020 calendar.

“Earth CelebrAction” is the theme of Lavazza’s 2020 calendar, released here on Thursday, as the world heads into an uncertain future singed by extreme weather cycles, Amazon wildfires and brinkmanship over the climate deal.

Shot by the celebrated American photographer David LaChapelle for the Lavazza Group, the stunning photos set in Maui, Hawaii are as life affirming as they are a contrast to a world under siege by 20th century lifestyles.

In their conception and execution, they are a fitting continuation of Amy Vitale’s shots of art installations in natural settings in the “Good to Earth” series of the 2019 calendar.

Running through Mr. LaChapelle’s works are a series of verbs: Listen, sustain, honour, reconnect, breathe, care, respect, change...

In his own words, the photographs employ “magical realism and fantasy and uses the natural world as a heavenly garden... an escape to a better place, like a story book, a world without climate change, people living in harmony. It was this story to tell.”

Mr. LaChapelle intended the work to be a playful celebration. In counterpoint to the realistic narrative of David Attenborough’s Our Planet, a recent documentary series that unbundles the mesmerising beauty of the natural world on high-definition television screens, instilling a sense of loss.

Francesca Lavazza of the foundation says the calendar is a celebration of variety. It calls for proactive and positive action. “Now nature — tamed, endangered, mortal — needs to be protected from people. When we are afraid, we shoot. But when we are nostalgic, we take pictures,” Susan Sontag’s words in On Photography (1977) sound prescient as art and literature engages more with climate change.
