The Madras High Court has said that an analysis report of the National Environment Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) on Noyyal water prima facie reveals that the “components in the water sample are in high percentage as against the acceptable standards of those components that are in drinking water.”
The First Bench comprising Chief Justice M.Y. Eqbal and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam, had given a direction that the water samples collected from the river at Kasipalayam in Erode district be sent to the institute's zonal lab at Taramani here for analysis. The institute filed its report dated October 29, 2010.
In its order, the Bench said a perusal of the report prima facie revealed that the components in the water samples were in high percentage. It said that before passing the appropriate direction, it was directing the registry to circulate a copy of the report to the counsel for the respondents. It directed the authorities (respondents) to file a detailed affidavit mentioning the units alleged to have been closed by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board. The matter has been posted for November 22.
