My son has settled in the United States and is soon going to apply for an American citizenship, and later, for an Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) card. He owns an apartment in Chennai and in his registered sale deed his last name is entered fully. But when applying for the American citizenship, he is planning to shorten it from ‘Sundararajan’ to ‘Sundar’. His first and middle name will be retained.
If and when he plans to sell his apartment in Chennai, will there be an issue due to the change of name?
Soma Sundararajan

The procedure laid down in India for change of name of Indians residing overseas will have to be complied with. Change of one’s name in India is complete only upon issuance of a notification in the Government Gazette to this effect. From the date of the said notification, the new name can be adopted. In future transactions relating to property, the new name should be used. It may be mentioned that your son was previously known by his old name.
