What is propinquity effect in psychology?

June 28, 2018 12:15 am | Updated 12:48 am IST

This refers to the tendency to form friendships and other forms of interpersonal relationships with people we come across often in our daily lives. People who live near each other or work in the same places are more likely to form a bond with each other when compared to others who are not exposed to each other as often. This is because constant exposure can lead to increase in trust. The propinquity effect was proposed by American psychologists Leon Festinger, Stanley Schachter and Kurt Back in their 1950 paper, “The Spatial Ecology of Group Formation”.
