The Twenty-fourth Madras Provincial Conference was held to-day [May 9] at 3 P.M. in the special Pandal in the Reading Room compound at Conjeevaram under the presidency of Mrs. Sarojini Naidu, the well-known poetess of India. The Pandal in which the Conference was held was beautifully decorated with flags, buntings and ever-greens. The following mottos written in bold letters were put up in all the prominent places of the Pandal: “Self-Government is the great aim of national politics.” “You are your own creation and you carve out your own destiny.” “Self-Government is the cement of the Empire.” “True love of country knows no barrier of caste and creed or language.” “Your ideal is autonomy within the Empire and not absolute independence.” “In union alone lies the hope of a happy future of our country.” “Trust and confidence are indications of strong Government.” “England’s welfare is India’s prosperity.” “Taxation and Representation are inseparable.” “Self-Government is the goal of our political ambition.” “The greatest glory of a ruler is to create popular Government.”
