With Rajaram no longer alive, the WikiLeaks disclosure of DMK Minister >K. Rajaram ’s conversation with a United States diplomat during the Emergency (April 10) has no relevance today. The party has come a long way, and tasted power at the Centre for many years as part of a government described as the most corrupt. It will never opt for seceding from India anymore.
The latest episode of WikiLeaks helps us understand the minds of Indian political leaders and reads like a story. It will come in handy for political parties readying for the 2014 general election.

The revelation that Rajaram asked a U.S. diplomatic representative in 1975 whether Washington would assist Tamil Nadu if it decided to secede from India is shocking. This is a pointer to the thinking of the party four decades ago.

The cable from the U.S. Consulate in Chennai to its embassy in New Delhi and the State Department has clearly pointed to DMK leader M. Karunanidhi’s role in helping the LTTE and its cause of Tamil Eelam (“LTTE could have threatened Karunanidhi, U.S. surmises,” April 9). The Tigers had a free run in Tamil Nadu in 1989, which culminated in the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi and many others.
