The Hindu to go in for another redesign is beyond comprehension. The new product has taken its readers back to the 1960s or even earlier. It is now ‘senior-citizen-unfriendly’ and we would like to remind the editors that this group of readers forms the bulk of its readership. Reading the smaller font is like going for an eye test.

In some ways, the redesign is disappointing. Changes such as the colour of the masthead and replacing the analytical articles on the Editorial and Perspective pages with short ones are not appreciated. However, one needs to compliment the paper for still following its core values which have made this daily, as The Times rightly called it so, among the best newspapers in the world.

It was surprising to see the introduction to the new format and made me feel happy.

In his last column, the Reader’s Editor had alerted us about the change and we were waiting for this eagerly. As a reader of the daily for over four decades I am happy to say that the changes are welcome.

Although change is painful initially, I guess that we will get used to it. The font used in ‘Weather watch’, ‘Brief news’ ‘Letters to the Editor, exchange rates should be increased for the sake of senior citizens. I hope that the plan to boost print circulation is successful.

As the older generation of reader fades away, the younger generation craves for an English newspaper of international standards to improve their knowledge, vocabulary, etc. The Hindu is there to fulfil their wish and the redesign and its “content-driven approach” is bound to fulfil this need.

As far as the redesign is concerned, the new font is pleasing to the eye. As an avid reader for more than 65 years, I hope the daily considers most of the suggestions its readers put forth so that all of us have a wholesome paper to read.
